I'm glad to hear that another historic church is doing what needs to be done to allow handicap access and renovate the existing church. What a beautiful church! Kudos to the renovation committee for their commitment the historic structure.

Andy Birkey is the head guy over there and it looks like he really enjoys his work as much as he says he does.
Custom church furniture is not all he does, but it's one of his favorite things to build. He also takes a lot of pride in building memorial church furniture to honor parishioners who have passed away.

Neo Gothic Presider's Chair | J. A Birkey and Associates, Limited
This is a neo-gothic presider’s chair that I built for a Catholic church. I used some panels which were reclaimed from the communion rail that was demolished in the 1970′s. However most of the panels and gothic detailing were created to closely imitate and live along side the 100 year old pieces. The materials used were birch plywood, polar, basswood (for the carved pieces), and a cold cast plastic was used for replicating the carved details.
This was part of a complete altar furniture suite which included side altars, a 29 ft. tall reredos, altar, and an ambo (or pulpit). All these furniture items were created to compliment each other and the Gothic church santuary in which they now reside.

Look at the crazy chair that this guy built. It's called a presider's chair and it sits in the altar area of a Catholic church. it was built by Andy Birkey of J.A. Birkey and Associates, Limited of Bloomington, Illinois. Mr.Birkey handcrafts each piece of altar furniture according to the specifications he works up with the priest and/or building committee to be a proper style and size for the church.
